I started to look at Salvador Dalí near the end of BA3a and his art inspired my project for this unit. I researched the work he did for Un Chien Andalou and Spellbound and both films sparked my interest for surrealism and then eventually making surrealistic films.
A large part of this project makes reference to the great artist. As I have mentioned before, my goal for this project is to create an instillation – a bedroom of some kind – filled with objects or props I have made to create a surreal environment, in which the public can enter and create their own film stills with a provided film camera. I wanted the room to have a recognisable feel to it – most people when you mention surrealism will go straight to Salvador Dalí, of course, he is the father of surrealism – this is the reason I wanted to give the audience a sense of familiarity and yet also seeing something new and intriguing.

A lot of my work is a reference to Dali’s use of symbolism – so this includes ants, melted clocks, elephants with extremely long legs, snails, eggs and drawers. The fact that all of these objects are symbolic and have meaning to them makes this project a really exciting one.
