During BA3a, I created my own Cigarette brand Pompier. I extended this to BA3b by printing the label and creating cigarettes and placing them in the box. I made the cigarettes by glueing coffee stirrers together and sanding down the edges to create a rounded shape. I then painted the design on the cigarettes and glued them inside the box – I glued them at different heights to make it seem a little more realistic.

To go alongside the cigarettes, I designed 4 packets of matchsticks. I designed them with the aesthetic of the room in mind. I knew there were a few shades of the bright yellow/orange so I decided to paint one of the packets in those tones – with black and red to contrast it. The lobster makes reference to the film I made and the significance of lobsters in surrealism. Similarly, I painted ties as a reference to the suit from the film. The wine bottles were a reference to memories I hold from holidays in France with my grandparents and the chillies were painted as a statement that matches, one lit, are hot.

To create the match head, I mixed sugar with acrylic paint and dipped the end of the matchstick to evenly coat it. I feel as though this was a very successful experiment and I was extremely pleased with how they turned out – I was afraid the water from the paint would dissolve the sugar – resulting in a lack of texture.

I then added a strip of sandpaper to the bottom of each match box to mimic the striker.

Overall I believe this was a successful experiment and brings a lot to the overall room. Slight bursts of colour draws the eye to the room – encouraging people to look eagerly around the entire space.
