I decided I wanted to make a crossword for my instillation as they remind me of my grandad who always has the daily newspaper in his hand and is completing the crosswords from it. My grandad is the only one who will quiz me on artists and what they did, he always buys me books on new artists so I can discover more. I want this to be like an ode to my grandad who has been a huge inspiration to my work recently. I have chosen the theme of the crossword to be surrealist artists, including names like, Dalí, Breton, Bourdin, etc.

I wanted the crossword to look like an old newspaper with creases on it. I started off with a ball of clay which I rolled out into a sheet about 1cm thick. I then trimmed the edges to make it seem like it was a tested crossword from the newspaper. Once I had finished trimming the edges, I placed pencils under the clay to create folds – giving it a slightly more realistic look.

Overall, I am pleased with the way this turned out and feel as though it is the perfect ode to my grandad.
