Reflections.

One of my resolutions this year was to take notice of my surroundings more which in time has opened my eyes to things I have never noticed before. An example of this is because of the way that objects are, our reflections may be distorted. Once I had noticed the fact that the screws in my mirror created a fish-eye perspective, I was frantically looking for other objects that distorted my reflection.

Having watched the surrealistic film The Flat by Jan Švankmajer the scene with the mirror has really inspired me to make my own film. The protagonist in Švankmajer’s film looks into a mirror – instead of seeing his reflection as it is, he sees the back of himself instead. The nonsensical fact that this happened, made the protagonist question why it was happening. In a lot of surrealist films, there are surreal events occurring one after the other and they are made to seem completely normal. I really enjoyed the fact that the film explored the fact that it wasn’t normal and the fact that it shouldn’t have been happening.
Below is a storyboard I have come up with while including the initial idea of viewing things differently and seeing how objects can alter reflections.
