Inspired by Dalí’s melted clocks.

A lot of us are familiar with Dalí’s melted clocks within his paintings, and I wanted to create an object inspired by them. The famous melting clocks represent the omnipresence of time, and identify its mastery over human beings. It is said that his inspiration for the soft watch came from the surreal way that Dalí saw a piece of runny Camembert cheese melting in the sun. I love the fact that a symbol within the world of surrealism can mean so much and come from something so accidental.

I started off by making this vase by cutting out two vase-like shapes, a bottom, and a strip to link and hold them together without making them touch. I then fixed them together with masking tape and cut a shape mimicking the fact that it was melting and stuck it to the front of the structure. The next step was to create a paste with flour and water and rip strips of magazines to then bind them to create one whole structure. I did multiple layers and let them dry in between each layer. Once it had dried, the structure felt very strong which meant that I was ready to move onto the filler.
